Management Team

Prior to joining MPG, Mr. Croxall was Chairman and CEO of LVL Patent Group, a privately owned patent holding company headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia. LVL, under Mr. Croxall’s direction, acquired and enforced two portfolios and subsequently sold its interest in those portfolios prior to Mr. Croxall’s appointment to the CEO position of MPG.

Prior to LVL, Mr. Croxall was the CEO and Chairman of Firepond (NASDAQ:FIRE) from 2003 – 2009. He acquired the public company in 2003 and took Firepond private in an all cash tender offer. While CEO of Firepond, he identified the value of Firepond’s patent portfolio and decided to sell the patents into a new private entity for enforcement. Mr. Croxall engaged IP Navigation Group and the Firepond patents generated approximately $90 million in licensing revenues from 2004 through 2009.

Previous employers were KPMG and Motorola. He has an MBA from Pepperdine University (1995) and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Purdue University (1991).

Mr. Crawford has over fifteen years experience in the technology and business sector with expertise in a wide range of disciplines including new media, mobile marketing, intellectual property, security, and compliance. He was a founding member of Kino Interactive, LLC, a developer of enhanced communication software and digital media solutions, and raised the seed capital through private investment to fund Kino¹s initial move into the Streaming Media sector in 2001. In 2006 Mr. Crawford became CIO, and joined the Board of Directors of Augme Technologies, working extensively in the Intellectual Property division to effectuate monetization through licensing, and enforcement, as well as assisting in reducing to practice the company¹s innovations, and positioning the patent portfolio as a competitive differentiator. He is a named inventor on several Internet Technology patents pending with the United States Patent & Trademark Office.

From 2013 through his appointment as CFO of Marathon Patent Group, Mr. Knuettel was Managing Director and CFO for Greyhound IP LLC, an investor in patent litigation expenses for patents enforced by small firms and individual inventors.  Since 2007, Mr. Knuettel has been the Managing Member of Camden Capital LLC, which is focused on the monetization of patents Mr. Knuettel acquired in 2007. From 2007 through 2013, Mr. Knuettel served as the Chief Financial Officer of IP Commerce, Inc.  IP Commerce is the creator of an open commerce network, delivering on-demand access to the next generation of commerce services in the payments industry.  From 2005 through 2007, Mr. Knuettel served as the CFO of InfoSearch Media, Inc., a publicly traded company, at which he managed the acquisition of numerous private companies, multiple PIPE transactions and the filing of numerous registration statements.  Prior to InfoSearch, from 2000 through 2004, Mr. Knuettel was at Internet Machines Corporation, a fables semiconductor company located in Los Angeles, where he served on the Board of Directors and held several positions, including Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer. At Internet Machines, Mr. Knuettel raised almost $90 million in equity and debt and managed the sale of the business in 2004. During 1999, he was Chief Financial and Operating Officer for Viking Systems, Inc., a Boston-based producer of enterprise software systems for non-profit fundraising institutions.  From 1996 through 1999, he was Director of Finance and then Vice President of Operations and Chief Financial Officer for Fightertown Entertainment, Inc. in Irvine, California.

Mr. Knuettel was a member of the Board of Directors and Chairman of the Audit Committee for Firepond, Inc., a publicly traded producer of CPQ software systems. Mr. Knuettel received his BA with honors in Economics from Tufts University and holds an MBA in Finance and Entrepreneurial Management from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. David Kuan-Yu Liu brings unique perspective as a technologist, an inventor with monetized patent portfolios, and an expert witness involved in numerous patent litigations.  Prior to joining Marathon Patent Group, Dr. Liu served as an expert witness/consultant in patent litigations and patent evaluations.  Prior to becoming an independent consultant, he worked as a technologist in the semiconductor industry, with an emphasis on flash memory technology development.  He has worked at numerous semiconductor companies including Texas Instruments, AMD, Xilinx and Maxim Integrated Products.  Dr. Liu holds over 90 U.S. Patents; many of his inventions have been applied to flash memory manufacturing.  Dr. Liu received his Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

Erich Spangenberg is the founder and former CEO of IP Navigation Group (IPNav). He is also the founder and former CEO of nXn Partners (predictive analytics). Mr. Spangenberg was previously a partner at the prestigious law firm, Jones Day, as well as an investment banking executive at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. He is regularly quoted and featured in major news and industry trade publications and his influence in the IP space has resulted in numerous industry recognitions.
